After the brutal death of Sambhaji Maharaj in 1689, his wife, Yesubai, and their son, Shahu Maharaj, were captured by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
Yesubai endured immense hardship in captivity. She remained a prisoner of the Mughals for nearly 19 years, showing incredible resilience and political acumen during this time. While captive, she skillfully negotiated with Aurangzeb, safeguarding the interests of the Maratha kingdom to the best of her abilities. It's believed that her diplomatic skills and strategic thinking prevented the complete collapse of the Maratha resistance during a critical period.
She played a crucial role in ensuring that Shahu received a good education and remained aware of his heritage and responsibilities. This was vital for the future leadership of the Marathas. Although a prisoner, Yesubai maintained her dignity and continued to influence events from within the Mughal camp, supporting the Maratha cause indirectly.
Yesubai was finally released from Mughal captivity in 1707, after Aurangzeb's death, by his son Azam Shah. After her release there was dispute about who will become the next Chhatrapati. The release of Shahu Maharaj by the Mughals was a calculated move to create a power struggle within the Maratha empire, which it successfully did. It started a conflict between Shahu and Tarabai.
